Samsung Galaxy S8 & S8 Plus – The End Is Near?

Whenever I think of or come across these phones – Samsung Galaxy S8 & S8 Plus, one particular song comes into my head ‘you’re way too beautiful girl…’ because seriously, these phones are. They are the kind of phones that just need to be purchased so that even if there is no credit or data, you can compensate yourself with the beauty.

However, despite their beauty, you’ll agree with me that that it is never a good reason to purchase a phone, no, anything, based on beauty alone.  Let’s take the phones one at a time and find out what makes them review-worthy. You never know, one of these may be that phone of your dreams. I know BOTH are phones of mine!

SAMSUNG GALAXY S8

The Galaxy s8 is an example of a good job with an even better packaging. This phone has this feel that makes your hands feel content. Its 5.8-inch screen finishes off the sleek look too. I’ll define this phone as Samsung’s (good) attempt at being sexy once again. It operates on Android 7.0 which is a plus (the latest of course). Another striking feature is the 4GB RAM, coupled with a 1.9GHz octa-core processor (Snapdragon 835/Exynos 8895 Chipset), efficiency is not the S8’s problem or shouldn’t be.

Going forward, Samsung Galaxy S8 has a display resolution as high as 1440×2960 pixels. The phone itself has an onboard storage of 64GB upgradable to 256GB via SD card. This is probably why they felt bold enough to use that annoying feature I hate. The one that makes you choose between a memory card and a SIM or 2 SIMs, known as HYBRID SIM ‘whatever’. I long for the days when you could have two SIMs & a memory card altogether in a high-end device like this. Sigh… good old days.  Despite the ample space, that feature will never cease to annoy me.

How about cameras? Beautiful, if you ask me, or anyone who has used this device. Front and back cameras at 8MP and 12MP respectively. The quality is up to bar for a 2017 phone.  Battery doesn’t slow its roll either. Equipped with a 3000mAh non-removable battery, the s8 will not annoy you with unreasonable need to be charged. The finger print scanner placement is however a cause for controversy. Rather than placing the scanner below the camera, Samsung placed it beside. Complaints have come in and people claim it makes usage a cumbersome task. Others however claim it is not that bad and that the worst about it is the change.

Opinions are purely subjective. One undisputedly good thing, however, is the fact that the s8 is water resistant. So feel free to engage in a water fight or walk in the rain with your s8 as your companion. No harm will come to it. One change for Samsung is that they seem to have (finally) outgrown the use of the physical home button. The s8 works mainly with sensors.

Opening up the Galaxy S8 is definitely not disappointing. In the box you’ll find:

  1. A pair of AKG headphones with extra ear buds. These beauties cost $100, which is approximately equal to #39,000. (if my conversion is slightly off, apologies, concentrate on tech not stock exchange)
  2. Samsung adaptive fast charging wall charger
  3. USB-C adapter
  4. Micro USB to USB-C adapter
  5. SIM tray ejector

Stunning! Let’s finish off this impression with a full look at:

Wow, right? Yep. Samsung out-did themselves on this one. But do you know something even more mind boggling? There is an S8 PLUS! The plus there signifying bigger, better, sexier and even more futuristic. Some of the features, if not most are very similar. After all, they follow one another and they are in the same series. But a huge mistake would be to classify them as the same. Admittedly, the S8 plus costs more than the S8. It is however justified. Let’s take a look at the s8 plus.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S8 PLUS

You know how every hot girl has an even hotter younger sister? Well the S8 plus is that younger sister. The increase in size has it looking even sexier. The phone makes me want to touch it. However it seems I’m totally besotted so let’s view other important features of the phone.

Okay, so you take the Samsung Galaxy S8, increase the dimensions and viola, you have a bigger phablet sized phone which is what the S8 plus is. It is very similar in size to the iPhone 7 plus. Though it is heavier than the standard S8 at 173g, it is definitely not uncomfortable carry around.

The S8+ has a 6.2” display. However it comes with the same screen resolution as the standard S8 which means there’s a reduction in its PPI (pixels density). This shouldn’t discourage you because it’s most likely that’ll you’ll hardly notice that fact. There’s no physical home button as in the S8 (did I mention that I never liked that button?). There’s also an upgrade when it comes to battery power. The S8 plus has a 3500mAh battery- significantly stronger than the S8.

The Galaxy S8+ has RAM and storage variants of 4GB/64GB and 6GB/128GB respectively and the chipset varies as well: snapdragon 835 for the US and the Exynos 8895 (courtesy of Samsung) for the rest of the world. It is also water and dust resistant.

However, since the S8 plus multiplied the S8’s good sides, it is only expected that there’s also a higher problem with the bad sides. And these “higher problems” come in form of a hard-to-use finger print sensor. Since the S8 plus is significantly bigger than the S8, it means that the finger print scanner is even more to the side, making it hard to be reached.  It really is a piece of work! (heck) Getting a case makes the sensor easier to reach, though. It however doesn’t make it a problem-free experience.

In the box, you’ll get the same things as the S8.

  1. A pair of AKG headphones with extra ear buds. These beauties cost $100, which is approximately equal to #35,000.
  2. Samsung adaptive fast charging wall charger
  3. USB-C adapter
  4. Micro USB to USB-C adapter
  5. SIM ejector
