Gionee A1 & A1 Plus – The Phones That Went To College & Passed

I think Gionee has made this review easier. They’ve given themselves an A1 grade. So all that’s left is to prove it. I secretly titled this review: “The phone that went to college -and passed” *insert applause*

Gionee A1

The A series is a new series launched by Gionee. This series features the first 7.0 OS phones that Gionee made. And it is beautiful. Let me come again. It is beautiful! Normally, new generation Gionees have a somewhat peculiar and attractive look. The A1 however beats them unarguably. It features a 2.5D curved (gorilla) glass as well as a metal back and a glass finish at the front. I admit I love beautiful phones. ( I bet you do too) But what attracts me even more is a beautiful operating system. Running on an android 7.0 (Nougat), the A1 is up to date. It features a 2GHz octa-core processor as well as the Amigo 4.0 interface. Oh and a whooping 4GB of RAM. That’s a lot!

I love the battery too. The 4010 mAh places it way- above average. It charges fast too. It supports USB OTG, its brightness is standard as expected. The screen is visible even in the sunlight.

This next feature sealed my choice. It has a fingerprint scanner which is common, yes, but guess where it is. Right there on the home button. It unlocks in 0.2 seconds. I love the originality.

Another epic feature is the camera. It is superb! No, they are superb. The front camera has a mega pixel of 16Mega-pixels while the back has one of 13Mega-pixels. Feel free to snap and snap and snap anything, and everything. This phone educated me on the term “split screen”. Basically, this is a feature that allows multitasking without minimizing. So you can chat and watch a movie. I likey.

The A1 supports USB OTG, as is expected. Yes, the phone is (a bit) bulky. It weighs 183 grams. But it is expected with a battery of such power. The phone comes with a case and a screen protector. It shouldn’t suffer any injuries any time soon. Gionee phones are notably durable.

So what DON’T I like about the Gionee A1? It uses hybrid Sim. Yes, it has an internal storage of 64 GB. But that doesn’t excuse it. I wonder who thought up that idea. Also, It does get rather hot. Not to the point of scalding or anything. But it has its own way of saying “put me down!”. Then I’m still wondering where the USB type C port vanished to. Most current phones have that feature and I’m wondering why not Gionee.

Overall Gionee did a great job on this device. Let’s finish this up with a look at

 Gionee A1 Plus

Gionee obviously feel pleased with themselves once more. Its an A1 PLUS this time. Though it’s a bit queer that they took the test and they get to mark it. But hey, you won’t see me complaining. For one thing, its battery capacity has gone up by 540mAh, placing it at 4550 mAh. Of course, the increase in battery power (and other things) increases the weight to 226 grams. It still has the same display resolution but it’s screen size has been increased to 6.0 inches. This means the PPI drops to 367. But that’s the only thing that us dropping in the A1 plus. Its cameras are outstanding. Its rear camera boasts the dual feature that had us in awe months back. It has a combined camera of 18Mega-pixels (13+5MP Cameras). The Gionee A1 Plus bags a front camera that has up to 20MP. Wow! Usually, the rear camera has a higher pixel count. I’m liking this new trend Gionee is starting (although it’s not all about mega-pixels anyway).

Gionee A1 Plus

And people, it HAS a type C port. Of course it runs on android 7.0 ( nougat). It also has a 4GB RAM. I like the increment of the screen size. It goes from 5.5 to 6.0, giving you a phablet. In case you were hoping a miracle happened and they didn’t use hybrid SIM, I’m sorry, they did. The nightmare lives on. They are trying to bribe us with a 64GB RAM (upgradable to 126GB via memory card), but we will not be swayed!

Its available in mocha gold and grey ( go for grey). One other thing I like is the panic button that can be activated by pressing the home button thrice. The finger scanner is in the same place as it is with the A1. Gionee gave a lotta work to that home button. Let’s take a look at:

I honestly think Gionee did a fabulous job with these two. I’d probably give them the A1 rating my self (or A minus because of that hybrid SIM.) What do you think? Would you give them an A1? Let’s hear from you.
