Best Android Phones Below N50,000 In Nigeria 2017

I think the easiest part about buying an android phone is getting the money. The hard part is deciding what to get (and ensuring you’re not cheated but that’s a topic for another day). So, how can you know how to get the best value for your money when buying an android phone? Answer: keep on reading.

I have earnestly compiled a (very) reliable list of the “Best Android Phones Below 50k in Nigeria 2017”

Recommended:

To make this even complete, I’ve divided the list into two sections. Phones under N50,000 and phones above or around N60,000, in that order.
Enough introductions, let’s get down to business… This post is going to be a long one, apologies 🙂

Best Android Phones in Nigeria Under #50,000

Since one of the main factors we’ll be considering is price, I’ll arrange them in ascending order (cheapest to most expensive) Let’s take a proper look, shall we?

Huawei Y3 II

This phone is unbelievably inexpensive. And what’s more? It actually gives you value for your money. With a 4.5” screen and a 62.3% screen to body ratio, the Y3 II still manages a decent display. Equipped with a 1GB RAM (which is expected considering the price) the Y3 II isn’t a phone for heavy users.

The memory too is low at just 8GB but keep in mind that considering the price, it is above average. The shocking thing is despite the front camera measuring just 2 MP it still gives decent selfies even in low lighted areas. The battery measures 2100mAh which surprisingly still is strong. It boasts 220hours stand-by time and 540 minutes talk time. In conclusion giving the price, I wouldn’t spend time weeping over the lows. The Y3 II is a good bargain.

Tecno Camon C7

Do you make use of your phone outdoors? Do you crave an affordable phone made for impressive pictures and video calls? If yes, then this is the phone for you. This phone is still visible outside even when the brightness is not turned up to the maximum. Its battery has a capacity of 2500mAh, with a standby of 175 hours (tested and proven).
The Camon C7 also powers up considerably faster (10 seconds to be exact) than the C9 which takes approximately 40 seconds to power up.

In general, I’d say I’m impressed with Tecno on this one. Especially for photography!

Tecno W3

Released May 2016, Tecno W3 is not only affordable but has an impressive operating system of Android 6.0 (Marshmallow). Although that’s not much of a biggie but its sleek and attractive device gives its competitors a run for their money.
Equipped with a 1.3GHz dual- core processor and 1GB of RAM, it multitasks quite beautifully (so you can play that game, music and still chat on Facebook). And though it doesn’t run on 4G, it still is an excellent choice for browsing the internet. And the best part, Tecno W3 has got dual LED flash on the back to brighten up photos in low light condition as well as a front-facing LED flash to brighten up selfies.

Infinix Hot 4

Infinix Hot 4

Before we begin, can we give Infinix a round of applause? I think they deserve it. Infinix has heard and understood our plight. No longer will only big and expensive phones have quality fingerprint scanners. But, even one as affordable as the Hot 4 has one. Infinix went even further to add a (non-removable) 4000mAh battery as a great plus. Meaning you can go 2 days on music, 3G and phone calls altogether. But that’s not all; the Hot 4 has a camera that offers a wide range of edit options.

This phone is an excellent choice any day. However, the low-level brightness aches my heart. It is not quite visible even at full brightness in the sunlight. Let’s view, in detail.

Tecno L8 – Battery Monster

Tecno has my heart for this one! Yea, sure, sure, the L8, released in 2016, April, has a 16GB ROM (with memory card support up to 32GB), and a sleek design, but that’s not what has got me sold. The Tecno L8 has a battery of 5050mAh. (you read that right, no need to visit an optician). I repeat, I am in love. Goodbye to power banks. And if Power Corporation guys refuses us power, the joke’s on them. But that’s not even all. It sports the new HiOS interface.

HOWEVER, Tecno just had to add some features that made this dream phone not so dreamy. It has an OS of 5.1 Lollipop. *insert sigh* You can’t just eat your cake and have it, can you?

Let’s have a view at the full specs.

Tenco Boom J8

I rather like the name “boom”, it has an edge to it. Though that’s not the only edgy thing about this device. The Tecno Boom J8 is really beautiful and has an edgy groove to it. The Tecno Boom J8 is Tecno’s way of telling music lovers “ I’m here for you”. It allows you to become your own mini DJ. Boasting the new HiOS interface, it makes the 3000mAh battery last like bigger one. One thing I love is how it supports a 128gb external memory card. Also, it seems Tecno heard our prayers because this phone supports USB OTG (USB on-the-go).

Samsung Galaxy J3

Finally, a Samsung! The Galaxy J3 has an OLED screen! An OLED screen! For those of you who don’t know what that means, allow me to explain. OLED is a light-emitting diode (LED), in other words it emits more light or brightness than majority of phones with LED screens.
The J3 is not a flashy phone, so no worries about some gentleman (with a gun) cutting your hand to get your phone based on the attention it attracts. It does NOT have a light sensor, sadly, BUT, it has voice control (hurray). It has a RAM of 1.5 GB, making multitasking a delightful experience. The icing on the cake is the 4G network. The Samsung J3 has 4G. Say hello to delectable browsing.

What makes me sad about this phone is the internal storage. It has an 8GB ROM. Worse still is that a lot of it is eaten up already by a pre-installed Samsung kit. For a music and game lover, this is a disaster. I could fill up the remaining with instrumentals alone. And no FIFA 2017! However Samsung seems to be saying “fear not”. They have compensated us with a memory card slot supporting up to 256GB. It comes with a (passable) battery of 2600mAh and an operating system of Android 5.1 (lollipop). All in all, the Samsung J3 is a wonderful attempt at affordability and quality.

Gionee M5 Mini

Remember those times you’d jokingly ask your friends with full batteries to send you some? Well Gionee M5 mini heard your jokes and made it a reality. Equipped with a 4000mAh battery and an OTG supporting port, the Gionee M5 mini can charge other phones. The battery puts a power bank to shame ( at least it puts mine to shame). To add icing to the cake, the Gionee m5 mini, apart from its OS of Android 5.1 (lollipop), also sports Gionee’s Amigo 3.0 UI. This phone is good.

How about the display? Simply exquisite if you ask me. It is based on in-plane switching (IPS) technology, this gives sharp and wide-angle viewing. And it has gorilla glass (or child friendly glass, as I like to call it). As for connectivity, the Gionee M5 mini supports 4G, up to 150 Mbps. There’s no fault in its internal storage either. It measures 16GB in-built storage and can be extended with a memory card of 128GB. And lastly this is a photo-freak-friendly phone. Front and camera back cameras owning 5 MP and 8 MP, respectively.

Infinix Note 3

The Infinix Note 3 was released in 2016. And for a budget phone, I am excited. It is a big phone measuring 6.0” inches. So if you don’t like big phones, this is not for you. For one thing it is metal, so expect the sleekness you’ll see. The Note 3 has 2GB and 3GB (RAM memory) variants. However, only the 3GB variant supports 4G. The 3GB variant is also called Infinix Note 3 Pro.

It runs on a 6.0 marshmallow with XOS and has a battery of 4500mAh. It also supports the USB OTG. So what sets the Infinix Note 3 apart? Why spend hard earned cash on it? One reason is it has “aerospace cooling technology”. If you’re asking what “the hell” that is, you’re not alone. It is simply a new technology that exchanges heat (in a long technical process I don’t care to explain) for water transformed to vapour which keeps to your device cool. So say goodbye to over-heating. As is expected, the Note 3 comes with a fingerprint scanner. The resolution of the Note 3 is to die for. It makes wallpapers come alive… (ADVICE: Try minion wallpapers) Of course there are cons: no iris detection, amongst others. Despite those, the Note 3 is an android I’d recommend to those who can afford.

InnJoo Max 3

Nigerians are hard people to convince. Innjoo however, is slowly winning our hearts and the world’s at large. Innjoo Max 3 can be defined in a word: impressive. Loaded with a 4000mAh battery, the Max 3 has a stand-by time of 36 hours and a talk time of 19 hours.

It has a fingerprint sensor protected by 2.5D diamond cut glass. The sensor, for one thing, is impressive. It recognizes fingerprints in 0.35 seconds (Ode to Innjoo). The Max 3 is beautiful (go for rose gold) and isn’t even heavy at 162grams only. Its aluminum build is also a plus. Innjoo, well done! Actually, the low clocking speed of this phone coupled with a lower OS of Android 5.1 (lollipop) breaks my heart.

Despite these small hitches, I’d say a job well done, Innjoo, we may eventually love you fully.

Tecno W5 Lite

Tecno W5 lite is very similar to its predecessor, the W5. It has an attractive build of plastic with a metal frame and a display of 720×1280 pixels. Also, it is equipped with 1GB RAM and a processor clocked at 1.3GHz speed. It runs a more recent version of Android being version 6.0 (Marshmallow), and comes in black, gold and white. Its camera, however burst my bubble – the front camera has been reduced to 2 MP, so you may not ‘slay’ in your selfies no matter what you wear. *sigh* They’ve compensated us however with a 13 MP back camera. Gionee F103 Pro

This candy bar phone is a nice attempt at affordability. Its viewing angles are to die for! It also has a brilliant touch response and a Chameleon Theme App. This app let’s you change your theme to blend with your surroundings. Yup! It has 2GB of RAM and an OS of Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) with the Amigo 3.2 interface. It also supports 4G, which is nice for a change. Its camera is top-notch for a fact and makes your selfies “ooh laa laa-ish”.

None of that low quality rubbish with this phone. It comes in white and gold (which I trip for). Also, it has an internal storage of 16GB which is upgradable to 128GB. Despite a lower battery capacity of 2400mAh, the F103 Pro is a feather to Gionee’s cap.

Now just in case you can afford to add a few more bucks to your 50k Android phone hunt, here’s a list of:

Best Android Phones in Nigeria Around #60,000

In this list, we have:

  • Huawei GR3
  • Tecno L8 Plus
  • Tecno Camon C9
    (All Dual SIM)

Let’s go!

Teco Camon C9

There’s some amount of special love for this phone. To me, the pros really outweigh the cons by far on a 80/20 scale. It is equipped with Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) OS, and a 1.3GHz quad-core processor. The Camon C9 has got your images covered. It boasts a sweet 8MP front camera and a 13MP camera on the rear. It measures 5.5” and has a display resolution of 720×1280 pixels.

The C9 supports dual micro SIMs and has 4G capability too. It comes with a 16GB in-built storage and a 2GB of RAM. The battery of the Tecno Camon c9 is worth its salt. Its 3000mAh and can standby for 200 hours. Tecno also took security into deliberation and gave us an iris scanner (eye scanner). However, it is slow to an extent. So by the time it’s ready to give you access, you’d have obtained a new eye. Lol.
It takes a whole 5 seconds to recognize your iris provided the lighting is good. It also supports USB OTG, as expected. Its image output is a standard one, watching movies is a delight! One thing I love is how you can take a screenshot with tapping just 3 fingers on the screen. I also have equal love for its black and gold colors. Did I mention how great the audio output is?

Its image output is a standard one, watching movies is a delight! One thing I love is how you can take a screenshot with tapping just 3 fingers on the screen. I also have equal love for its black and gold colors. Did I mention how great the audio output is? Well it’s good enough. The design makes way for a slight hump so the output isn’t affected. In conclusion, I love the C9.

UPSIDES

  • Good audio output
  • Nice design
  • Gorgeous image output
  • USB OTG

DOWNSIDES

  • Iris scanner can be a bit slow.

Huawei GR3

The Huawei GR3 has good features such as 5-inches HD display, 13-megapixels rear camera and 5-megapixels on the front side.  There’s more with the 2GB of RAM, a 1.5GHz octa-core processor, and 3G/4G connectivity. It has an OS of Android 5.1 (Lollipop). One of my favorite features is the phantom touch. This feature can transport you to an app from the lock screen when you simply draw the first letter of the app. For example, drawing “f” can take you to Facebook (It’s not something new but, cool huh?).

I also like the camera. Selfies look edited but not to the point of distaste. It simply gives a positive view of you. So they’ve settled all picture lovers. Huawei GR3 has a resolution of 720×1280pixels and a battery of 2200mAh. It also has an aluminum unibody build and comes in gold, silver and gray colors. Despite its battery capacity, it lasts on standby for 230 hours and has 8 hours uninterrupted talk time. Its internal memory of 16GB is upgradable to 128GB via a memory card. This solves the common issue of space. In the end, for a budget phone, I give Huawei a thumbs-up!

UPSIDES

  • Sleek design
  • Good quality camera

DOWNSIDES

  • Low battery capacity
  • No fingerprint security

Tecno L8 Plus

This phone is for you if you’re into phones with massive battery capacity and good multitasking abilities. Its battery measures 5050mAh. The 5” phone has a 2GB RAM and a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor. The design deserves an applause too, with a plastic body with curves (in all the right places), giving you a firm grip.

Despite the front camera’s depressing 2-Megapixels, it still captures decent selfies. The rear camera’s 8-Megapixels is maximized as well, giving fair photos. It runs on Android 5.1 (Lollipop) and has a display resolution of 720 x 1280pixels. The L8 plus has a 16GB internal storage, upgradeable to 128GB. Of course it allows for dual SIM. It also comes in white and black but doesn’t support 4G network. For that battery size however, it’s pardonable!

UPSIDES

  • High battery capacity
  • Decent for multitasking.

DOWNSIDES

  • Unimpressive front camera
  • No security

  1. Observe carefully and you will notice what these phones all have in common, a cheap processor -MediaTek. This is the reason why Samsung and other high end manufacturers roll out expensive devices because they make use of more expensive and reliable processors, e.g Snapdragon, cortex etc.
If you are a basic phone user these are options to consider, but if you are a heavy user you might want to just squeeze out some more cash.

    1. Well said Samuel.
However, I’d like to correct the notion that Mediatek processors are not reliable. This is wrong. They are, but may not be durable enough. I have had great experience with Gionee phones. You’d notice little or no difference between them and some high-end devices.

While I’d choose a Samsung or Huawei any day (because of Qualcomm Snapdragon). That does not mean a Tecno will not work for me just fine.
My own formula is that I pay more for class. About performance, let’s not deceive ourselves too much 🙂

Great point once again and thanks for stopping-by buddie!
